Middle School Writing Sub Plans, Week Long Emergency Sub Plans, No Prep, 5 Days, 64 Pages

$9.99

Out for a week? Every writing period is planned, Monday to Friday. These middle school writing sub plans give your substitute five days of writing and grammar review, one set per day for every period, ready as emergency sub plans, long term sub plans or a no prep ELA sub binder for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Each set is a writing review packet with a quick lesson, practice and a challenge on sentence craft, grammar and punctuation, claim, evidence and reasoning, informative writing, and revising and editing, plus team tasks, optional review games, early finisher puzzles and answer keys, so a sub with no ELA background can run it. No tech needed. Print and go for a planned absence, a sub tub, a substitute teacher binder, or emergency lesson plans on a sick day.

Perfect For

  • A full week out: sick leave, a conference, jury duty, a family emergency
  • A sub who does not know your subject or your class
  • Teachers with several Writing sections: one set covers every period that day
  • Your sub tub or emergency sub folder, ready before you need it
  • Long term subs who need a first week that runs itself

How It Works

  1. Print the binder and leave it on your desk. The week plan on page 4 is already filled in, with page numbers and minutes for every set.
  2. Monday’s set runs in every period you teach on Monday, Tuesday’s set on Tuesday, and so on. The calm puzzle fits any gap, the team task fills a block period, and the game is optional fun for the last 15 minutes.
  3. Every set stands alone, so the plan is only a sample order: swap sets between days, or use one with another class when it fits. Each set opens with a line that says what it reviews.
  4. Every answer is in the key, so the sub needs no subject knowledge.
  5. Prefer your own order? A blank weekly schedule is included.

What’s Inside: 64 Pages

  • A sub binder front section: a note to the substitute, the week plan already filled in Monday to Friday with page numbers, a blank weekly schedule, class list and dismissal, a “how it went” sheet, and a Monday opener (Meet Your Sub)
  • Writing set 1, Sentence Craft: reviews fixing fragments and run-ons, combining short sentences, varying sentence openers and lengths
  • Writing set 2, Grammar and Punctuation for Writers: reviews commas, apostrophes, capital letters, subject-verb agreement, commonly confused words, editing a passage
  • Writing set 3, Claim, Evidence and Reasoning: reviews identifying claims, choosing the strongest evidence, writing reasoning, counterclaim and rebuttal, a CER paragraph
  • Writing set 4, Informative Writing: reviews organizing notes into an outline, text structures, transitions by purpose, paraphrasing versus copying, sea otters
  • Writing set 5, Revising and Editing: reviews revising word choice, transitions and conclusions, editing with a checklist, giving peer feedback, a weak draft
  • ELA team tasks, one per day (about 40 minutes, groups of four): Rank the Bee Sources; The Class Magazine; The Six Sentence Story; The Coverless Book; Graphic Novel Debate
  • Optional ELA games for the last 15 minutes, a fun way to end the class or something for extra time, with ELA questions for grades 6 to 8: Whiteboard Quiz Game; Paper Password; Class Feud; Classroom Millionaire; Mystery Box
  • Calm puzzles and reset sheets for early finishers or a loud moment: Word Search and Reset Sheet; Sudoku and Grounding Sheet; Secret Codes and Control Sheet; Maze and Brain Dump; Word Ladders and Three Good Things
