No whistle, no gym floor: just thirty days of PE and health at the desks. Six weeks of high school PE and health maternity leave sub plans: long term sub plans for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade PE and health in six binders, which any sub can run in a regular classroom, on paper, with no gym and no equipment. Every task (each PE and health set, calm block, team task, game and Monday opener) starts with a "Say this to the class" box: two or three sentences that tell students what to do and how to start. Every day has individual work (the set and a calm block) and a team task for groups of four, plus an optional game on that day’s lesson as a fun way to end the class; on Day 30, the big review day, the set, the team task and the game go back over all six weeks. Every set has a core task and a ★ challenge for fast finishers. Nobody has to exercise: where a task mentions a move, trying it is optional and every move has a seated way. No prep: print and go. I planned the six weeks as a strong start for the first weeks of a maternity leave, and they serve a medical leave, a family leave or any absence of about six weeks just as well.

Perfect For

  • The first six weeks of a maternity leave, so your PE and health classes start the leave with a plan for every day
  • Six weeks out: surgery or medical leave, a family leave, a long illness
  • A long-term sub who is not a PE teacher, or weeks when the gym is booked: everything runs in a regular classroom, and every answer is in the key
  • PE, health and combined PE and health classes, with a core task for everyone and a ★ challenge for fast finishers
  • Your sub tub or emergency sub folder, ready before you need it

How It Works

  1. Print the six binders and leave them on your desk. Week 1 covers days 1 to 5, Week 2 days 6 to 10, Week 3 days 11 to 15, Week 4 days 16 to 20, Week 5 days 21 to 25 and Week 6 days 26 to 30. Each binder has its own week plan on page 4, already filled in with page numbers.
  2. The sub reads the "Say this to the class" box at the top of the task, then runs the day’s PE and health set in every period. Each set is one period (45 to 55 minutes) of written work. Every student does the core task; fast finishers go on to the ★ challenge.
  3. The calm block (learn 8 terms, then a quiet self-test) is for early finishers or a loud moment, the team task for groups of four fills a block period or extra time, and the game is optional fun for the last 15 minutes.
  4. Everything happens at desks, on paper. Nobody has to exercise. Where a task mentions a move (a circuit card, a warm-up card, a fitness station), trying it is optional and every move has a seated way; reading aloud is always optional too.
  5. Every set stands alone, so each plan is only a sample order: move any set to any day. Each set opens with a line that says what it reviews. Day 30 is the big review day and works best last. Every answer is in the key at the back of each binder, so the sub needs no PE or health background. Prefer your own order? Each binder includes a blank weekly schedule.

What the Sub Gets

  • A note to the substitute in each binder: the daily routine, how the core task and the ★ challenge work, and what to do if the class is loud
  • A "Say this to the class" script for every task: the Monday opener, each PE and health set, each calm block, each team task and each game (126 in all), two or three sentences that say what students do, how (on their own, in groups of four or as a whole class) and the first step
  • A step by step sub script for each Monday opener, and a "Read this out" box on most games
  • Each week plan already filled in with page numbers, a blank schedule, a class list and a "how it went" page
  • Every answer in the key, including the ★ challenges

Helpful Details

Written for grades 9 to 12. Each day has one PE and health set that runs in every period you teach, so one binder covers all your PE and health classes. The readings and scenarios are my own original writing, and the health days stay at school curriculum level: the three mental health days name where to get help (a trusted adult, the school counselor and the 988 Lifeline), the emergency day is CPR awareness, not a certification, and the refusal skills days are practiced with invented characters, never with personal questions. Every set and team task has a core task and a ★ challenge. Days 1 to 29 each have their own topic, team task and game questions; Day 30 is the big review day, with a set, a team task and a game that go back over all six weeks. Each filled-in plan is a sample order: every set stands alone. No tech and no gym: nothing needs a login, a projector, student devices or sports equipment, just pencil and paper (a few role cards are cut or torn apart). Weeks 2 to 6 of this class are never sold alone; this is Weeks 1 to 6 in one download. Week 1 covers the same topics as my one-week High School PE and Health sub plans, now with a say-this script on every task, and Weeks 1 and 2 are the same as my 2-week High School PE and Health sub plans. I see six weeks as a strong start for a maternity leave, not the whole leave: your classes have a solid plan for the first weeks while the longer plans are settled.
