High School English Long Term Sub Plans, 4 Weeks, 9th 10th 11th 12th Grade ELA, 20 Days, No Prep, 342 Pages

$34.99

From Norse myths to MLA citations, I wrote a month of English your sub can run. These high school English sub plans are long term sub plans for four full weeks of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade ELA: a reading set and a writing set every day, on original stories, articles, poems and speeches. Every reading and writing set lists the Common Core standards it practices, and every task (each reading set, writing set, calm block, team task, game and Monday opener) starts with a "Say this to the class" box: two or three sentences that tell students what to do and how to start. Every day has individual work (the two sets and a calm block) and a team task for groups of four, plus an optional game on that day’s reading and writing as a fun way to end the class. Every student page has a core task and a ★ challenge for fast finishers. No prep and no tech: print and go for a long-term sub, a medical or family leave, or any absence of about a month.

Perfect For

  • Four weeks out: surgery or medical leave, a family leave, a long illness
  • A long-term sub who is not an English teacher: every task has a script, and every answer is in the key
  • A vacancy or a late hire, when a high school English class needs a month of solid lessons
  • English 9, 10, 11 and 12, with a core task for everyone and a ★ challenge for fast finishers
  • Your sub tub or emergency sub folder, ready before you need it

How It Works

  1. Print the four binders and leave them on your desk. Week 1 covers days 1 to 5, Week 2 days 6 to 10, Week 3 days 11 to 15 and Week 4 days 16 to 20. Each binder has its own week plan on page 4, already filled in with page numbers.
  2. The sub reads the "Say this to the class" box at the top of the task, then runs the day’s reading set in every English period. Each set is one period (45 to 55 minutes). The writing set is the second period of a double block, or extra work. Only one period a day? Run the reading set.
  3. Every student does the core task; fast finishers go on to the ★ challenge. The calm block (learn 8 words, then a quiet self-test) is for early finishers or a loud moment, the team task for groups of four fills a block period or extra time, and the game is optional fun for the last 15 minutes.
  4. Every set stands alone, so each plan is only a sample order: move any set to any day. Every answer is in the key at the back of each binder, so the sub needs no English background. Prefer your own order? Each binder includes a blank weekly schedule.

What the Sub Gets

  • A note to the substitute in each binder: the daily routine, how the core task and the ★ challenge work, what to do with one period or a double block, and what the Common Core line on each set means
  • A "Say this to the class" script for every task: the Monday opener, each reading set, writing set, calm block, team task and game (104 in all), two or three sentences that say what students do, how (on their own, in pairs, in groups of four or as a whole class) and the first step
  • A step by step sub script for each Monday opener, and a "Read this out" box on most games
  • Each week plan already filled in with page numbers, a blank schedule, a class list and a "how it went" page
  • Every answer in the key, including the ★ challenges, with sample answers and what to accept for the open writing

Helpful Details

Written for grades 9 to 12. Each day has a reading set that runs in every English period and a writing set for a double block or extra work, so one binder covers all your English classes. The stories, articles, poems and speeches are my own original writing; the few short quotes from older classic works name their author, work and year. Every reading set, writing set and team task lists the Common Core ELA standards it practices on a small line under its title. The codes are the grades 9 and 10 standards, and the note to the sub explains that each one has a grades 11 and 12 standard with the same number in the same skill area, written for a higher level. Every student page has a core task and a ★ challenge. The four weeks share no texts, team tasks or game questions: twenty days and forty sets in all. Each filled-in plan is a sample order: every set stands alone. No tech: nothing needs a login, a projector or student devices, just pencil and paper (a few cards are cut apart). Weeks 2 to 6 of this class are never sold alone; this is Weeks 1 to 4. Week 1 covers the same texts and lessons as my one-week High School English sub plans, now with a say-this script on every task and the Common Core standards on every set, and Weeks 1 and 2 are the same as my 2-week High School English long term sub plans.
