Written At the Level, Not Cut Down

Every article was written to A1 from the first word. The texts stay inside present tense and verb position, W questions, der, die and das with ein and kein, Akkusativ and Dativ, modal verbs, separable verbs, Perfekt, the imperative and comparison, with sentences of five to eleven words. Nothing in here is a harder article with the difficult words swapped out, which is why a beginner can finish one in a single lesson.

One Grammar Article Per Module

The eight grammar articles follow the order a standard A1 course uses, one article per module. Module one is verb endings, W questions, yes and no questions, negation with nicht and the possessive mein and dein. Module two is der, das and die with ein and kein, the pronouns er, es and sie, plural forms and the Akkusativ. Module three is the modal verb koennen, the Satzklammer, verb position and the time prepositions am and um. Module four is separable verbs and the Perfekt with haben and sein. Module five is the local prepositions with Dativ, sein and ihr, the Genitiv on names and the Dativ verbs. Module six is vor, nach and fuer, mit and ohne, wollen and sollen and the Sie imperative. Module seven is war and hatte, the Perfekt of non separable verbs, the du and ihr imperative and duerfen and muessen. Module eight is comparison, the conjunction denn, wuerde and the ordinal numbers.

A Complete A1 Review

Run the eight grammar articles in order and you have a full A1 review, one module at a time, with the reading articles as the comprehension practice in between. I wrote them alongside the Menschen A1 course, so they follow that order module by module, but every article practises standard A1 grammar. That means they fit any A1 course, and you can just as easily pull the single article that matches the unit you taught this week.

What the Articles Are About

Grammar articles: Meine Familie in Bremen, Mein Buero in Zuerich, Mein Samstag in Wien, Die Reise nach Salzburg, Annas Wohnung in Bern, Fuenf Naechte im Hotel, Ein Sonntag zu Hause and Winter und Feste im Dezember. Reading articles: Ein Schultag, Eine kleine Stadt, Unser Hund Bruno, Der Markt am Samstag, Meine Freundin Sara and Emmas Geburtstag. Everyday topics from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, classroom safe, and written to be understood by a first year class.

Marking Together on Screen

The deck is built for the moment after students have written on paper. Open the article in Present mode and click. Gap one fills in, in green. Click again for gap two. Students mark their own sheet as you go, so you are not reading out fourteen answers while half the room loses its place. The contents page links to every article and the Contents button on every slide brings you back.

Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks. Print the PDFs, project the slides, or do both. No student devices or logins required.

Play the deck in Slideshow (Present) mode so the click through answers and the contents links work. The printable workbook is the same in the Google Slides and the PowerPoint route, so you only choose how you want to show the answers.
