ESL Reading Articles: Levels B1 and B2, Intermediate Reading Comprehension Passages and Cloze Grammar Worksheets, Printable Workbook plus Google Slides and PowerPoint

$4.99

The point where my students stop decoding and start thinking about a text. These ESL reading comprehension worksheets and cloze passages are written at CEFR B1 and B2, with open gaps instead of bracketed choices, sentences to correct, a short writing task, and reading questions that ask for inference and the writer’s purpose.

Perfect For

  • ESL, ELL and EFL classes at intermediate and upper intermediate level, teens and adult learners
  • Six cloze grammar articles with open gaps and six reading articles with 12 questions each
  • Exam style practice, homework, sub plans, small groups and one to one tutoring

How a Lesson Runs

  1. Hand out the article page you want. Every page shows its level in the corner, so B1 and B2 students can work side by side
  2. Students read the whole text once before they write anything
  3. They fill the open gaps, correct the sentences and write their own three lines, or answer the comprehension questions
  4. Open the deck and click through the same article on screen. One answer fills in at a time, in green, so the class marks the work together

Why Teachers Love This Pack

  • The gaps sit inside a real text, so students choose the tense and the linker from the meaning, not from a drill
  • Reading questions go past the surface: inference, writer’s purpose, writer’s attitude and vocabulary in context
  • The answer key lists the alternative answers that are also worth a point

Here is a quick look at the pack:

Written At the Level, Not Cut Down

Every article was written to its CEFR band from the first word. The B1 texts work with present perfect, past continuous, used to, first conditional, should and must, relative clauses, and linkers such as however, although and while. The B2 texts add past perfect, the passive, second and third conditionals, reported speech and participle clauses, with nevertheless, in addition and despite. No article in here is a C1 text with the hard words taken out, which is why the grammar the gaps test is the grammar students are ready for.

What the Articles Are About

Grammar articles: The Saturday Repair Cafe, Why Teenagers Need More Sleep, The Return of the Night Train, Letting the City Grow Wild, The Four Day Week Experiment and Who Wrote This. Reading articles: The Door a Smell Opens, Why Batteries Get Tired, The Food We Never Eat, Let the School Field Grow, The Myth of the Multitasking Student and Who Chooses What You Watch. Science, technology, media and the environment, classroom safe and written to be understood anywhere in the world.

Marking Together on Screen

The deck is built for the moment after students have written on paper. Open the article in Present mode and click. Gap one fills in, in green. Click again for gap two. The corrected sentences appear the same way, with the alternatives that are also fine shown underneath. Students mark their own sheet as you go, and the Contents button on every slide takes you back to the article list.

Works On

Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks. Print the PDFs, project the slides, or do both. No student devices or logins required.

Important

Play the deck in Slideshow (Present) mode so the click through answers and the contents links work. The printable workbook is the same in the Google Slides and the PowerPoint route, so you only choose how you want to show the answers.
