How a Lesson Runs

  1. Hand out the article page you want. Every page shows its level in the corner, so A1 and A2 students can work side by side
  2. Students read the whole text once before they write anything
  3. They fill the 14 numbered gaps, choosing between the two options in brackets, then write three sentences of their own
  4. Open the deck and click through the same text on screen. One answer fills in at a time, in green, so the class marks the work together

Every Article Rule Beginners Need

  • First mention with a or an, later mention with the
  • A for a job, and no article with plurals and uncountable nouns
  • No article with meals, streets and countries
  • The with superlatives, ordinals, musical instruments, and the only one of something
  • The when a phrase after the noun identifies it, and the when we both already know which one

Articles in a Text, Not in a Drill

A worksheet of twenty separate sentences cannot teach the first mention rule, because there is never anything before the sentence. In these six texts a bike appears, and two lines later it is the bike. That is the whole point, and it is why students who have done article drills for years still get this wrong. Each text is written at its CEFR level, so the grammar around the gaps is grammar the student already knows and the articles are the only thing to think about.

Marking Together on Screen

The deck is built for the moment after students have written on paper. Open the text in Present mode and click. Gap one fills in, in green. Click again for gap two. Students mark their own sheet as you go, which turns the check into the lesson: you stop at the gaps the room got wrong and say why the is right there. The contents page links to every text and the Contents button on every slide brings you back.
