Written At the Level, Not Cut Down
Every article was written at C1 from the first word, in an abstract and academic register: perfect aspects, inversion, cleft sentences, nominalization, hedging and complex noun phrases, with idiom and collocation carrying real weight. Each text runs to about 340 to 390 words, long enough that a student has to hold an argument in their head rather than scan for one fact.
What the Articles Are About
Grammar articles: The Price of Your Attention, on the economics of attention, The Shape of a Street, on how cities shape behavior, and How Words Change Their Minds, on language change. Reading articles: Machines That Decide, on the ethics of automation, The Archive That Rewrites Itself, on memory and testimony, and The Tyranny of the Measurable, on performance targets in institutions. Serious adult topics, classroom safe, and written to be understood anywhere in the world.
Marking Together on Screen
The deck is built for the moment after students have written on paper. Open the article in Present mode and click. Gap one fills in, in green. Click again for gap two. The corrected error lines appear the same way, with the alternatives that are also fine shown underneath, which at C1 is often the most useful part of the lesson. The contents page links to every article and the Contents button on every slide brings you back.
Works On
Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks. Print the PDFs, project the slides, or do both. No student devices or logins required.
Important
Play the deck in Slideshow (Present) mode so the click through answers and the contents links work. The printable workbook is the same in the Google Slides and the PowerPoint route, so you only choose how you want to show the answers.
