Ghost lights, groundlings and a sneaky aside, with a wager riding on the Final. This high school drama review game runs in Google Slides or PowerPoint for 9th 10th 11th 12th grade drama and theater, with a Daily Double and print cards.

Perfect For

  • 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade drama and theater classes, from Theater 1 to an advanced group
  • Unit review, test prep, the end of a semester, a review before a show or a break, or a Friday class
  • Sub days: the sub runs the slides, or students play in pairs with the printed cards

How the Game Works

  1. A team picks a category and a dollar value on the board, then answers the question
  2. Click the answer button to check. Correct wins the value, wrong lets another team steal
  3. One cell hides the Daily Double: the team wagers first, then doubles it if correct
  4. After the board, every team wagers on the Final Question. Highest total wins

Why Teachers Love This Game

  • Answers show the key words in green, and the teacher key lists other answers to accept
  • No prep, no logins and no acting needed. Works in Google Slides or PowerPoint, or fully on paper with the cards
  • Every question is editable, so you can swap in your own questions

What This Game Reviews

The proscenium stage, projection, stage right versus house right, the ghost light and upstaging; monologues, asides, subtext, showing a feeling on stage and the logline; yes-and, obstacles, backstory, cold reading and emotion memory; the Greek festivals, the Globe’s groundlings, commedia dell’arte, Thespis and Noh; the costume designer, blackouts, decibels, the fresnel and the teaser; understudies, a dark theater night, cheating out, the counter-cross and the dramaturg; and a Final Question that puts three moments of theater history in order. The questions review lessons from my high school drama sub plans, and the game works just as well on its own for any 9th to 12th grade drama or theater class.

Made for Grades 9 to 12

The questions are short and climb from beginner terms at $100 to harder ones at $500: the proscenium stage and the costume designer at the start, emotion memory, Noh theater and the dramaturg at the top. Playing needs no acting: teams answer out loud or write their answer down. Every question is editable, so you can swap any of them for the terms your class uses.

Play It Without a Projector

Print the question cards double-sided and cut them apart. Lay them question-down on the table so students see only the category and the dollar value, just like the board. A student picks a card, a partner reads the question and checks the answer printed on the card. The same cards work for pairs, stations and small groups, and for a sub day.

Daily Double and Final Question

The Daily Double hides behind one cell on the board. The team that picks it wagers any amount up to their total before seeing the question, and doubles that wager if they answer correctly. When the board is cleared, every team writes down a Final Question wager, the question is shown, and teams add or lose their wager. Highest total wins.

Works On

Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks. Project the slides. No student devices or logins required.

Important

Play in Slideshow (Present) mode so every cell, button, and link works. The sound buttons (thumbs up, thumbs down, and music) work in the PowerPoint version, which is included here. Google Slides does not play sounds, so those buttons are simply decorative in the Slides version.
